The Internet Crime
Complaint Center (IC3) was established as a
partnership between the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)
and the National White Collar Crime Center to serve as a means
to receive Internet related criminal complaints and to further
research, develop, and refer the criminal complaints to
federal, state, local, or international law enforcement and/or
regulatory agencies for any investigation they deem to be
appropriate. Many internet scams and crimes,
including spam, viruses and mal-ware, are generated outside of
our jurisdiction (including outside the United States) leaving
us as frustrated as the victim because of our lack of
resources. With that, we will do whatever we can do to
help our residents. If you become the victim of
an internet crime, the first thing is to contact the Belmont
Police Department at 267-8351 to report the crime. We
will take a report and determine what the most effective way
of handling the complaint would be. After you
report the crime to us, you should the go to the Internet
Crime Complaint Center and report it to them as
well. This site also provides additional information on
internet crimes. IC3 gives victims of
cyber crime a convenient and easy-to-use reporting mechanism
that alerts authorities of suspected criminal or civil
violations. For law enforcement and regulatory agencies at the
federal, state, local, and international level, IC3 provides a
central referral mechanism for complaints involving Internet
related crimes. Please remember that internet
crimes can be very complicated and are sometimes far reaching
and we will endeavor to help you in whatever way we can. |
