New Hampshire author, columnist and storyteller Rebecca Rule is featured entertainer on Friday, May 16 at 7PM at the Corner Meeting House in Belmont. The Belmont Historical Society presents the program, open to all at no charge, through a generous grant from the New Hampshire Humanities Council. Named "Thalia, Muse of Comedy" by New Hampshire Magazine - and also known as "The Moose of Humor", Rebecca will tell her favorite true(ish) and close-to-home stories, collected all over the state.
Society president Magnus McLetchie encourages all with interest in "rural character and rural characters" to visit Belmont Village for a spring evening of laughter, lemonade and cookies. "Better than a Poke in the Eye" will recount some of Rebecca's favorite tales about town meeting, dump protocol, Catherine's battle with mosquitoes, and what some folks think ought to be the new state motto.
Her books include, The Best Revenge: Short Stories (University Press of New England), Could Have Been Worse: True Stories, Embellishments, and Outright Lies (Plaidswede Press) and new this spring, A Storyteller's Guide to New Hampshire (Islandport Press). Book review columnist for the Concord Monitor, Nashua Telegraph and Portsmouth Herald, often reprinted in Heart of New England, an online magazine, Rule has authored more than 600 columns since 1992. She also hosts the New Hampshire Authors Series on New Hampshire Public Television. A frequent and favorite Lakes Region guest, she has also been welcomed at the historic Belknap Mill, Gilmanton and was a resident artist-scholar-presenter in a Shaker School District Belmont school.
The Belmont Historical Society was founded in 1969 and builds awareness and pride in local heritage.
